Believed to be responsible for hiring [[catspaw|an assassin]] to murder [[Bran Stark]] while he lay in a coma, Tywin's son [[Tyrion Lannister|Tyrion]] is arrested at the [[inn at the crossroads]] by [[Catelyn Stark]], the wife of [[Eddard Stark]], the new [[Hand of the King]].{{Ref|AGOT|28}} Catelyn takes Tyrion to her sister, [[Lysa Arryn]], at the [[Eyrie]].{{Ref|AGOT|34}} Though Tywin does not care about Tyrion's welfare, he sees the arrest and kidnapping as a direct slight on [[House Lannister]]'s honor which he will not tolerate. In response Tywin sends Ser [[Gregor Clegane]] and the [[Mountain's men]], disguised as brigands, to sack and pillage various villages and hamlets across the [[riverlands]], Catelyn's homeland.{{Ref|AGOT|43}}

While Jaime leads a [[House Lannister|Lannister]] army to victory at the [[Battle in the hills below the Golden Tooth|Golden Tooth]] and [[Battle under the walls of Riverrun|Riverrun]], Tywin and his younger brother, Ser [[Kevan Lannister]] invade the [[riverlands]] with a second Lannister host. [[Fall of Raventree Hall|Raventree]] and [[yielding of Harrenhal|Harrenhal]] fall to the brothers, and Gregor burns [[burning of Stone Hedge|Stone Hedge]] and [[burning of Pinkmaiden Castle|Pinkmaiden]]. Tywin closes off the [[kingsroad]].{{Ref|AGOT|55}}{{Ref|AGOT|56}} Beric Dondarrion, Lord [[Karyl Vance]], and Ser [[Marq Piper]] continue to harass Tywin's host, however. Tyrion, having won his freedom from the [[Vale of Arryn]] via [[trial by combat]] and earned the loyalty of several [[Vale mountain clans|mountain clans]] along the way, joins Tywin's host at the [[crossroads inn]].{{Ref|AGOT|56}}

Tywin commands the reserve from the high ground during the [[battle on the Green Fork]]. He has Tyrion and his clansmen serve on the left flank, believing the undisciplined men likely to rout, but giving the northern commander, whom Tywin believes to be the young and inexperienced [[Robb Stark]], a chance to over-commit and be annihilated.{{Ref|aGoT|62}} The clansmen do not rout, however, and the northern commander is actually the cautious and experienced Lord [[Roose Bolton]]. The battle is a Lannister victory, but it buys enough time for a separate northern force under Robb's command to cross the [[Green Fork]] at the [[Twins]].{{Ref|AGOT|62}} Although Tywin leads his host on a forced march south,{{ref|AGOT|69}} Robb captures Jaime in the [[battle in the Whispering Wood|Whispering Wood]] and lifts the siege of Riverrun with the [[Battle of the Camps]].{{Ref|AGOT|63}}{{Ref|AGOT|69}}

Tywin holds a war council of his bannermen at the crossroads inn after learning of Jaime's defeat, and he considers Joffrey's execution of Eddard Stark in the capital to be madness. Tywin sends Tyrion to King's Landing to serve as Hand in his stead, control the small council and Joffrey, and to prepare the city's defenses in anticipation of an attack from one or both of Robert's brothers, [[Stannis Baratheon|Stannis]] and [[Renly Baratheon|Renly]]. Tywin forbids his son from bringing the whore [[Shae]] with him, however. Meanwhile, Tywin plans to march to Harrenhal to manage the war with the [[north]] and the riverlands. Tywin angers his daughter, Queen Regent [[Cersei Lannister]], by fortifying [[Harrenhal]] instead of marching to [[King's Landing]].{{Ref|ACOK|2}} He occupies [[Kingspyre Tower]] at the great castle.{{Ref|ACOK|30}} When Maester [[Tothmure]] receives [[Stannis Baratheon]]'s letter claiming that King [[Joffrey Baratheon|Joffrey I Baratheon]] is the bastard son of Cersei and Ser [[Jaime Lannister]], Tywin orders the letter destroyed.{{Ref|ACOK|30}} Tywin walks the battlements with the captive Ser [[Wylis Manderly]], and he allows [[House Frey|Frey]] prisoners to be ransomed.{{Ref|ACOK|30}} Lannister men in the [[riverlands]] are harassed by the [[brotherhood without banners|outlaw brotherhood]] of Lord [[Beric Dondarrion]], despite Beric having been reported as slain several times.{{Ref|ACOK|30}}

Instead of facing Tywin at Harrenhal, [[Robb Stark]], now the [[King in the North]] and [[King of the Trident]], marches from [[Riverrun]] and invades the [[westerlands]]. Robb smashes a new Lannister host being raised and trained by Tywin's cousin, Ser [[Stafford Lannister]], at [[Battle of Oxcross|Oxcross]] and turns his forces loose to scour the westerlands.{{Ref|ACOK|39}}

Ser [[Edmure Tully]], who has been tasked with holding Riverrun and guarding Robb's rear, gathers the riverlords to prevent Tywin from crossing the [[Red Fork]]. Tywin turns his host southeast on a forced march to the headwaters of the [[Blackwater Rush]], where he meets Lords [[Mathis Rowan]] and [[Randyll Tarly]] of the newly-allied [[Reach]]. They then join with the forces of Lord [[Mace Tyrell]] at [[Tumbler's Falls]].{{Ref|ASOS|14}} Sailing together on barges down the Blackwater, the Lannisters and [[House Tyrell|Tyrells]] arrive in time for the waning moments of the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], where they break and drive away the majority of Stannis's army, which had been on the cusp of victory, by taking them in the flank.{{Ref|ASOS|14}} Tywin commands the host's right flank during the battle.{{Ref|ACOK|62}} Tywin's son Tyrion is critically wounded in the fighting.{{Ref|ACOK|67}}

[[Robb Stark]] and Ser [[Brynden Tully]] return to [[Riverrun]]. They claim they had planned to lead Tywin's army on a long chase across the [[westerlands]], bleeding his forces and living off his lands, but that Ser [[Edmure Tully]] had disrupted their plan by stopping Tywin with the [[Battle of the Fords]].{{Ref|ASOS|14}}

Fearing Tywin's retribution for the [[fall of Harrenhal]], [[Vargo Hoat]] has [[Zollo]] chop off the sword hand of Ser [[Jaime Lannister]],{{Ref|ASOS|21}} hoping that this act will prevent his commander, Lord [[Roose Bolton]], from allying with Tywin in the aftermath of the [[Battle of the Blackwater]].{{Ref|ASOS|37}}

Tywin's timely arrival at the Blackwater allows him to take the majority of the credit for the Lannister victory. He appoints Ser [[Addam Marbrand]] to lead the [[gold cloaks]] and tasks him with finding the missing [[Tyrek Lannister]].{{Ref|ASOS|4}} Tyrion asks to be named heir since Jaime is ineligible as a [[Kingsguard]], but Tywin refuses to allow his dwarf son to inherit [[Casterly Rock]].{{Ref|ASOS|4}} He instead gives Tyrion, after his recovery, the position of [[master of coin]], which Tyrion sees as a demotion and an insult.{{Ref|ASOS|19}}

Tywin arranges for [[Wedding of Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark|Tyrion to be wed]] to [[Sansa Stark]]{{Ref|ASOS|19}} before she can be betrothed to [[Willas Tyrell]], giving him claim over [[Winterfell]] and directly denying Tyrion's ambition to inherit the Rock.{{Ref|ASOS|4}} He also makes plans to find a suitor to marry his widowed daughter, Queen Regent [[Cersei Lannister]], though they are never realized. Tywin offers her to Willas but Lord [[Mace Tyrell]], after being hectored by his mother, [[Olenna Tyrell]], refuses the match. Tywin demands that Tyrion act as if the offer were never made.{{Ref|ASOS|32}}

After learning that Robb Stark has unexpectedly wed [[Jeyne Westerling]] and that [[House Westerling]] has gone over to the [[House Stark|Starks]], Tywin remains in communication, via [[raven]], with Jeyne's mother, [[Sybell Spicer]]. He also communicates with Lord Bolton, who releases the mutilated Jaime from captivity,{{Ref|ASOS|44}} and Lord [[Walder Frey]], who sees Robb's marriage to Jeyne as an insult to [[House Frey]], as it breaks a marriage pact Robb had previously made to wed a Frey girl. The [[Red Wedding]] is the direct result of their correspondence, which sees Robb betrayed and murdered along with the vast majority of his host, effectively ending the war with House Lannister the victor.{{ref|ASOS|51}}{{Ref|ASOS|53}}

Tywin names Roose as [[Warden of the North]].{{Ref|ASOS|72}} While Tywin offers generous terms to defeated rebel lords, he orders [[Gregor Clegane]] to extinguish Vargo and the [[Brave Companions]] at [[capture of Harrenhal|Harrenhal]].{{Ref|ASOS|53}} Prince [[Oberyn Martell]] seeks justice for the death of his sister, [[Elia Martell]], and her children during the [[Sack of King's Landing]], so Tywin claims that the late Ser [[Amory Lorch]] was solely to blame.{{Ref|ASOS|53}}

Tywin Lannister has [[Tobho Mott]] reforge [[Ice]], the [[Valyrian steel]] greatsword of the late Lord [[Eddard Stark]], into two longswords as gifts, [[Widow's Wail|one]] for Joffrey on his wedding day and [[Oathkeeper|the other]] to Jaime.{{Ref|aSoS|32}} Not long after, King Joffrey is poisoned and dies at [[Purple Wedding|the feast following his wedding]] to [[Margaery Tyrell]]. Cersei accuses Tyrion of murder,{{Ref|ASOS|60}} although the crime was actually arranged by Olenna and [[Petyr Baelish]].{{Ref|ASOS|68}} When Jaime returns to King's Landing in the company of [[Brienne of Tarth]], Tywin plans for his son to be released from the Kingsguard. Jaime insists upon remaining [[Lord Commander of the Kingsguard|Lord Commander]], however, angering his father.{{Ref|ASOS|62}}

Tywin agrees to be one of Tyrion's three judges, alongside Oberyn Martell and Mace Tyrell, at the trial for Joffrey's murder.{{Ref|ASOS|66}} When it becomes clear that he is going to be found guilty, Tyrion demands [[trial by combat]], and Oberyn volunteers to champion him, as he does not accept that only Amory was to blame in the Sack. Cersei, being Tyrion's accuser, selects Gregor to represent the crown. During the duel, Gregor roars his guilt in slaying Elia and her son, Prince [[Aegon Targaryen (son of Rhaegar)|Aegon]]. Despite being [[poison]]ed by Oberyn's spear, the Mountain slays the Red Viper, and Tyrion is thus found guilty.{{Ref|ASOS|70}}

Because of Gregor's confession, Tywin fears [[Dorne]] might join [[Stannis Baratheon]], which could prolong the [[War of the Five Kings]] for years. He plans on having Gregor executed to appease [[House Martell]], but needs it to be seen to be the [[Ilyn Payne|King's Justice]] who carries out the deed, not poison. Tywin commands Pycelle to heal Gregor, but Pycelle's efforts prove fruitless.{{Ref|ASOS|72}}

Awaiting his sentencing, Tyrion is freed from the Red Keep's dungeon by Jaime and a reluctant [[Varys]]. Jaime admits that Tywin had forced him to claim that Tyrion's first wife, [[Tysha]], was a [[whore]]. Tyrion is enraged by this and has Varys show him to a ladder that leads directly into the [[Tower of the Hand]], Tywin's residence. When Tyrion finds his former lover [[Shae]] in Tywin's bed, wearing nothing but his father's golden chain of office, Tyrion strangles her to death with it. He then takes a crossbow from the wall and finds Tywin in the privy and confronts him about Tysha. Tywin remains belligerent, repeatedly calling her a whore, which Tyrion sees as the final insult. Tyrion shoots Tywin through his bowels with the crossbow, and Tywin dies on the privy, his bowels loosening in the moment of death.{{Ref|ASOS|77}}

After Tywin's body is discovered, it is prepared for a state burial. Queen Regent [[Cersei Lannister]] has the [[House Kettleblack|Kettleblacks]] remove the body of [[Shae]] and swears she will have the tongue removed of any man who mentions the whore was ever there.{{Ref|AFFC|3}} The remains of Lord Tywin are shown in his crimson armor for seven days in the [[Great Sept of Baelor]]. The smell of the body is so bad many of the mourners grow sick or faint from being too near. A drying of the mouth also causes Tywin's lips to curl up and make him appear to smile.{{Ref|AFFC|7}}{{Ref|AFFC|8}} Six [[silent sisters]] eventually take his bones west with an entourage of knights and lords from the [[westerlands]].{{Ref|AFFC|16}}

Cersei considers herself to be a worthy heir to Tywin.{{Ref|AFFC|36}} She offers a [[lord]]ship to whomever brings her the head of Tywin's murderer, [[Tyrion Lannister]],{{Ref|AFFC|7}} and she appoints Ser [[Harys Swyft]] as [[Hand of the King]].{{Ref|AFFC|17}} Lord [[Gyles Rosby]] hires a stonecarver to make a statue of Tywin for the [[Lion Gate]]. Cersei consents to [[Alyce Graceford]] naming her child Tywin if she has a boy, but she refuses to allow [[Lollys Stokeworth]] to do the same.{{Ref|AFFC|7}} One of [[Cersei's dromonds]] is named ''[[Lord Tywin]]''.{{Ref|AFFC|28}}
