Dickon was born at [[Horn Hill]],{{Ref|AWOIAF|Dickon Tarly}} the second son of Lord [[Randyll Tarly]] and Lady [[Melessa Florent]].{{Ref|AGOT|Appendix}} As a babe, Dickon's mother used to sing her son to sleep, alongside her eldest son [[Samwell Tarly|Samwell]]. Randyll soon put an end to it, fearing that the "soft [[septon]]'s songs" would make his second son soft, like Samwell.{{Ref|ASOS|46}} Lord Randyll eventually turned his attention to Dickon and started to groom him as his heir after he was repeatedly disappointed by Samwell. This grooming included taking Dickon along when Randyll left Horn Hill and requesting his presence when Lord Randyll held audiences.{{Ref|AGOT|48}}

After Lord Randyll forces Samwell to join the [[Night's Watch]], Dickon becomes the heir apparent to Horn Hill.{{Ref|AGOT|Appendix}}
