After [[Aegon I Targaryen|Aegon the Conqueror]] landed in [[Westeros]], set on [[Aegon's Conquest|conquering]] the [[Seven Kingdoms]]. King Mern IX of [[Reach|the Reach]] and King [[Loren I Lannister]] of [[Casterly Rock|the Rock]] agreed to join forces and throw the invaders back into the sea. The two armies gathered near [[Goldengrove]] in the Reach. Since he had brought half as many more men, Mern had the honor of commanding the center of the combined army from the Reach and the [[westerlands]]. [[Edmund Gardener|Edmund]], Mern's son and heir, was to lead the vanguard, while another son, [[Gawen Gardener|Gawen]], accompanied the king with the banner.{{Ref|TWOIAF|The Reign of the Dragons: The Conquest}}

Mern led the charge against Aegon's army alongside his kin. The combined might of the Reach and the Rock began to break the Targaryen host, but Aegon and his sisters, [[Visenya Targaryen|Visenya]] and [[Rhaenys Targaryen|Rhaenys]], took to the sky with their [[dragon]]s.
