==Plot==
The novella is set in [[Winterfell]]. According to Martin, it will feature Ser [[Duncan the Tall]] and his squire [[Aegon V Targaryen|Egg]], who will meet the "She-Wolves":<ref name="stuff" /> a group of formidable [[Stark]] wives, widows, mothers and grandmothers.<ref name=NaB/> According to fans' con reports, four of these "she-wolves" may be widows of previous Lords of Winterfell, and one the current [[Lorra Royce|Lady Stark]] whose husband [[Beron Stark]] is dying from a wound taken while fighting [[Ironborn]].{{ref|SSM|1409}} There may be a [[House Stark]] succession crisis, a struggle for power among the Stark ladies, possibly on behalf of their children, of which there were at least ten at the time.{{ref|SSM|1408}} Additionally, Martin mentioned this story in connection with the fact that there has never been a ruling Lady of Winterfell.{{ref|SSM|2763}}

==The She-Wolves==
The identity of the five "She-Wolves" has not been revealed yet. However, with the Stark lineage given in ''[[The World of Ice and Fire]]'', their names may be deduced:

*{{coa|Manderly|s}} Lady [[Myriame Manderly]], widow of Lord [[Rodwell Stark]] and Beron's sister-in-law.
*{{coa|Karstark|s}} Lady [[Alys Karstark (wife of Brandon)|Alys Karstark]], widow of Lord [[Brandon Stark (son of Cregan)|Brandon Stark]] and Beron's mother.
*{{coa|Ryswell|s}} Lady [[Robyn Ryswell]], widow of Lord [[Jonnel Stark]] and Beron's aunt by marriage.
*{{coa|Stark|s}} Lady [[Lynara Stark]], widow of Lord [[Cregan Stark]] and Beron's grandmother.

Moreover, four Stark women — [[Arsa Stark|Arsa]], [[Serena Stark|Serena]], and her daughters [[Arrana Stark|Arrana]] and [[Argelle Stark|Argelle]] — might be engaged to various degrees in the power struggle following Beron's injury, even though they did not marry a [[Lord of Winterfell]].{{refn|group="N"|For example, [[Serena Stark]] was the daughter of [[Cregan Stark]]'s eldest son [[Rickon Stark (son of Cregan)|Rickon]], who died long before his father did. Serena married her father's half brother [[Edric Stark (son of Cregan)|Edric Stark]], who died during the reign of his elder brother Lord [[Jonnel Stark|Jonnel]] and before his younger brothers [[Barthogan Stark|Barthogan]] and then [[Brandon Stark (son of Cregan)|Brandon]] became the lord. Arguably Serena had a right to Winterfell's seat herself but was bypassed (since there has never been a ruling lady of Winterfell{{ref|SSM|2763}}), or she could argue that Edric's sons [[Cregard Stark|Cregard]] and [[Torrhen Stark (son of Edric)|Torrhen]] had a better right than Brandon or Brandon's son [[Beron Stark|Beron]] did.
