It has been widely speculated that Ser Maynard Plumm, a character in The Mystery Knight, is really Brynden Rivers wearing a glamor.

Supporting Evidence

  • Maynard and Bloodraven are both thin with long, straight hair.[1]
  • Maynard claims to be distantly related to Lord Viserys Plumm;[1] Brynden Rivers is (officially)[2] a distant cousin of Viserys, who is a descendant of King Aegon III whereas Brynden is a descendant of his brother Viserys II.[3]
  • When Dunk hears a story about Aegon IV's promiscuity and says "We'd all be bastard sons of old King Aegon if half these tales were true," Maynard quips "And who's to say we're not?"[1]
  • When Kyle the Cat rants about Bloodraven's inaction in the face of Dagon Greyjoy's raiding, Maynard speaks in Bloodraven's defense, explaining that he is focused on Bittersteel and the Blackfyre exiles.[1]
  • While waiting for the ferry to Whitewalls, Maynard spends his time gossiping with an innkeep.[1]
  • There is something about Maynard that immediately troubles Dunk, but he can't quite place it.[1]
  • Maynard is the first to object to Glendon Flowers spilling his wine during a toast to Bloodraven.[1]
  • Maynard is unusually knowledgeable about current events for a hedge knight.[1]
  • Maynard knows about the Blackfyre conspiracy and urges Dunk to leave. He specifically suggests he go to Summerhall.[1]
  • Maynard takes an interest in Dunk and Egg's presence at Whitewalls during the Second Blackfyre Rebellion. Both Maynard and Bloodraven describe the wedding as a "nest of adders."[1]
  • Maynard knows about Egg's true identity and the ring hidden in his boot.[1]
  • Maynard says that Bloodraven knows "quite a lot" about Peake's conspiracy.[1]
  • Up close, Dunk finds Maynard's features queer. The longer he looks at his face, the less he seems to see.[1]
  • On one occasion, Maynard calls Duncan by his childhood name "Dunk."[1]
  • Maynard is not seen or heard from again when Brynden appears, having vanished shortly before.[1]
