Serwyn of the Mirror Shield is a legendary figure from the Age of Heroes,[1] although singers now claim he was a knight of the Kingsguard.[2] He is a favorite of the smallfolk.[3] Serwyn served the ancient Kings of the Reach from House Gardener.[4]
Legends
According to songs, Serwyn once saved Princess Daeryssa from giants.[5] He slew the dragon Urrax by approaching the beast behind his polished shield so the dragon only saw its own reflection, then spearing Urrax through the eye.[6] Serwyn was haunted by ghosts of all the knights he killed.[7]
Despite the legends that have him as a member of the Kingsguard, an institution created in 10 AC during the reign of King Aegon I Targaryen,[8] Serwyn lived in the time of the First Men.[9] His reputation remains so great that Tyrion Lannister uses Serwyn as comparison when describing the fame of Ser Barristan Selmy among smallfolk.[3]
