Bartimus is an old knight, the chief gaoler and castellan of the Wolf's Den.[1]

Appearance and Character

Bartimus has a scarred face and a blind eye. He looks like a skull when he grins. He is also missing a leg.[1]

Though he is a knight, Ser Bartimus worships the old gods.[1]

The oft-drunk gaoler is disinterested in the outside world but is fond of telling stories about the history of the Wolf's Den.[1]

History

Bartimus is a descendant of the First Men who lived at the mouth of the White Knife before the coming of the Manderlys.[1]

Ser Bartimus lost his leg to an unmanned horse falling on it and a maester's saw. Wyman Manderly gave the Wolf's Den to him as a reward for saving his life at the Battle of the Trident.[1]

Working alongside Bartimus at the prison are the headsman Garth and the turnkey Therry.[1]

Recent Events

A Dance with Dragons

In order to assure the return of his heir, Ser Wylis Manderly,[1] Lord Wyman Manderly publicly orders the execution of Lord Davos Seaworth, an envoy of Stannis Baratheon.[2] However, Wyman has Davos secretly sent to comfortable captivity in the Wolf's Den, a prison in White Harbor, and a criminal who resembles Davos is killed instead. The unnamed man's head and hands are removed and dipped in tar, and his fingers are shortened by Ser Bartimus so that the publicly-displayed remains look like Davos's.[1] Once the Iron Throne is informed of Davos's supposed execution,[3] Wylis is allowed to return from his captivity.[1]

Bartimus tells the history of the Wolf's Den to Davos while the Onion Lord is held in his prison. Davos is eventually brought into the New Castle for a secret meeting with Lord Wyman and Robett Glover.[1]

Quotes by Bartimus

Davos: What gods do you keep?
Bartimus: The old ones. Me and mine were here before the Manderlys. Like as not, my own forebears strung those entrails through the tree.
Davos: I never knew that northmen made blood sacrifice to their heart trees.
Bartimus: There's much and more you southrons do not know about the north.[1]

Quotes about Bartimus

He was the chief gaoler, a cadaverous one-legged knight, with a scarred face and a blind eye. When Ser Bartimus was in his cups (and Ser Bartimus was in his cups most every day), he liked to boast of how he had saved Lord Wyman's life at the Battle of the Trident. The Wolf's Den was his reward.[1]
