The Griffin King is a legendary figure of the Vale who lived thousands of years ago. His connection to griffins is unknown.
History
According to legend, Ser Artys Arryn, the Winged Knight, flew to the top of Giant's Lance on the back of a giant falcon to slay the Griffin King and thereby claim the Vale.[1][2] Maesters are skeptical, however, and believe that the actual Artys Arryn, an Andal warlord, became conflated with the legends of a First Men hero who may have lived thousands of years before the coming of the Andals.[2]
Game of Thrones
In supplemental Blu-ray material for the television adaptation Game of Thrones, Artys Arryn's defeat of the Griffin King is said to have been the first great victory of the Andals over the First Men.[3][4]
