A hermaphrodite is the equivalent to intersex in the real world.[N 1]

History

Queen Jeyne Westerling gave birth to a stillborn child possessing both male and female genitalia.[2]

Around the time of his birth, gossip claimed that Tyrion Lannister was born with the private parts of both a boy and a girl, but these rumors were false.[3]

A Dance with Dragons

Yezzan zo Qaggaz, a Wise Master of Yunkai and an extremely wealthy slave trader, is obsessed with grotesques, so he often purchases slaves with physical deformities to add to his "collection", including a hermaphrodite named Sweets, who is also one of his bedwarmers.[4][5] Tyrion Lannister alternately uses she/her[5] and he/him pronouns to address Sweets.[6] When Sweets guesses that Tyrion and Penny are trying to discern whether she is a man or woman, she tells them that she is "both" and shows them what's under her skirts.[5]

Notes

  1. ↑ "Hermaphrodite" is the term used in the novel, and conveys by association the beliefs and attitudes regarding intersex conditions that one would find in the setting.[1]
