Jon Arryn's silver sword is the sword of Lord Jon Arryn.

Appearance

Jon Arryn's sword is a handsome double-edged longsword that was engraved with a delicate silver tracery of a mountain sky. Its pommel was a falcon's head, and its crossguard was fashioned into the shape of wings. Catelyn Stark considers it "beautiful beyond a doubt".[1]

History

The sword was commissioned in King's Landing for Lord Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, by his wife, Lysa Arryn. Jon wore it whenever he sat on the Iron Throne in King Robert's place.[1]

A Game of Thrones

When Tyrion Lannister demands a trial by combat at the Eyrie to demonstrate his innocence in the death of Lord Jon Arryn, Bronn, a sellsword, volunteers to champion him.[2] Knowing that killing Tyrion would bring the wrath of Lord Tywin Lannister upon the Vale, Lady Lysa decides to choose an aged knight to champion her, Ser Vardis Egen, dressing him in plate over mail to make him slow and clumsy, and arming him up with Jon's sword, which was more of a ceremonial sword instead of one intended for combat, with Catelyn herself believing that Ser Vardis would have been more comfortable with his own sword.[1][3] Lysa claimed it was only fitting that her champion avenge Jon with his own blade.[1]

The duel between Ser Vardis Egen and Bronn takes place by the statue of Alyssa Arryn, which Bronn uses to hide. A failed lunge by Ser Vardis results in his sword striking the marble thigh of "Alyssa", and another failed attack results in Ser Vardis's sword striking the statue's elbow, breaking the sword. Bronn then pushes the heavy piece of marble on top of Ser Vardis to trap him before killing the defenseless knight.[1]

Quotes

I had that sword crafted for Jon in King's Landing. He wore it whenever he sat on the Iron Throne in King Robert's place. Isn't it a lovely thing? I thought it only fitting that our champion avenge Jon with his own blade.[1]

Jon Arryn's beautiful engraved silver sword glanced off the marble elbow of the weeping woman and snapped clean a third of the way up the blade.[1]
