A Storm of Swords

At Acorn Hall, Lady Ravella Smallwood accuses Tom of Sevenstreams of singing "Oh, Lay My Sweet Lass Down in the Grass" to seduce every milkmaid in the area. He defensively corrects her, saying he actually sings "Let Me Drink Your Beauty", which women are always pleased to hear.[1]

The lyrics for both of these songs are unknown, but not long afterwards,[N 1] Tom sings what may be[N 2] the lyrics of "Oh, Lay My Sweet Lass Down in the Grass":

My featherbed is deep and soft,
and there I'll lay you down,
I'll dress you all in yellow silk,
and on your head a crown.
For you shall be my lady love,
and I shall be your lord.
I'll always keep you warm and safe,
and guard you with my sword.
And how she smiled and how she laughed,
the maiden of the tree.
She spun away and said to him,
no featherbed for me.
I'll wear a gown of golden leaves,
and bind my hair with grass,
But you can be my forest love,
and me your forest lass.

Notes

  1. There is a conversation between Lady Smallwood and the brotherhood without banners about Jaime Lannister's escape from Riverrun; then Arya Stark leaves the hall with Gendry, they argue in the smithy, and then they return to the hall.[1]
  2. The lyrics Tom sings are in common meter with a 8.6.8.6 syllable pattern, whereas the title has a 5.4 syllable count.
