A spitfire is a type of siege weapon, a device which expel flame.[1]
History
Prior to the submission of Oldtown, the men of the City Watch of Oldtown prepared to fight the dragons of King Maegor I Targaryen by filling pails of water and sacks of sand, and by setting defenses upon the battlements along the city walls, such as spitfires and scorpions.[2]
Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, loaded the decks of his new Iron Fleet with spitfires and scorpions before Greyjoy's Rebellion.[3]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
In anticipation of the Battle of the Blackwater, the acting Hand of the King, Tyrion Lannister, has carpenters build hundreds of spitfires, scorpions, and catapults, which are then placed on the walls of King's Landing.[4][5] Tyrion also has men training to defend the city with spitfires, practicing with pots filled with green paint and dismissing anyone who spatters. After the men have mastered loading and firing, they are to use pots of lamp oil and practice at lighting and firing flaming jars.[6] To avoid scorpions and spitfires defending the walls of the capital, Stannis's ships lower their sails and only use oars, so they end up having little effect during the battle.[1]
A Feast for Crows
At Braavos, Arya Stark sees spitfires, scorpions, and trebuchets defending the battlements of the Arsenal.[7]
A Dance with Dragons
Lord Davos Seaworth sees spitfires and scorpions defending Seal Rock at White Harbor.[8]
