Spotted Pate is a hero from a thousand stories.

Culture

Spotted Pate is a pig boy, a good-hearted, empty-headed lunkhead, who always manages to succeed, often when his stupidity turns out to be a clumsy sort of cunning. He usually bests lords, knights, and septons. The stories all end well for Spotted Pate, including sitting on a high lord's seat or bedding a knight's daughter.[1]

Because of Spotted Pate's legendary status, "Pate" is a popular name among the smallfolk of Westeros.

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

Pate, a novice at the Citadel, hates when people compare him to Spotted Pate. When Leo Tyrell mocks Pate by calling him "our spotted pig boy", he considers hitting Leo in the mouth with his tankard and knocking out his teeth.[1]

Months later, a man who has killed Pate and replaced him introduces himself to Samwell Tarly as "I'm Pate, like the pig boy."[2]

Quotes

Spotted Pate the pig boy was the hero of a thousand ribald stories: a good-hearted, empty-headed lout who always managed to best the fat lordlings, haughty knights, and pompous septons who beset him. Somehow his stupidity would turn out to have been a sort of uncouth cunning; the tales always ended with Spotted Pate sitting on a lord's high seat or bedding some knight's daughter. But those were stories. In the real world pig boys never fared so well. Pate sometimes thought his mother must have hated him to have named him as she did.[1]
