The winter tourney at King's Landing was held at the capital in 253 AC,[1][2][3] a winter year.

History

The sixteen-year-old Barristan Selmy participated in the winter tourney as a mystery knight. He defeated both Prince Duncan Targaryen and Ser Duncan the Tall, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. King Aegon V Targaryen rewarded Barristan for his feats of prowess by granting him knighthood.[4] At the feast that night, ribs of wild boar were served, prepared the Dornish way with dragon peppers.[2]

Ser Jaime Lannister reads Barristan Selmy's entry in the White Book of the Kingsguard, which includes his accomplishments at the winter tourney.[4]

A Dance with Dragons

Ser Barristan Selmy recalls how King Aegon's sword felt on his shoulders when he was dubbed, and what he ate that night at the feast. He thinks he still recalls its taste far better than what he had eaten a few days ago.[2]
