==The Quarrel==
The beginnings of the First Quarrel were in {{date|87}}, after the death of Princess [[Viserra Targaryen]]. The queen had lost three of her daughters in the space of five years, with the princesses [[Daella Targaryen (daughter of Jaehaerys I)|Daella]] and [[Alyssa Targaryen|Alyssa]] dying in childbirth in {{date|82}} and {{date|84}}, respectively. In her grief, she was comforted by her surviving daughters, [[Maegelle Targaryen|Maegelle]] and [[Gael Targaryen|Gael]], but also expressed a desire to visit her daughter [[Saera Targaryen|Saera]], who had been scandalised and escaped her punishment to live as a novice in [[Oldtown]] to live in a pleasure garden in [[Lys]]. The queen had defied the king's edict, and secretly engaged agents to keep watch over Saera. 

In her grief for Viserra, the queen brought Septon [[Barth]] with her, to speak on the virtues of forgiveness and the healing properties of time. When he was done, the queen mentioned Saera's name. The queen said it was time for her to be brought home as her daughter, but the king called her a [[Lys|Lyseni]] whore. Alysanne cringed at his harsh words, but still requested he bring Saera home for the king's love of his queen, but the king again refused. He told her not to go to Lys without his leave, telling her she was dead to him, and to bury her. 

Alysanne did not fly to Lys, but she did not forgive Jaehaerys for his words. It had been planned for the king and queen to make a [[royal progress]] in the [[Westerlands|westerlands]] in {{date|88}}, but the queen told the king he could go by himself. She was leaving for [[Dragonstone]] to grieve for their dead daughters, alone. 

The king traveled through the Westerlands, then moved on to the [[Reach]] in {{date|89}}. By that time, the queen's absence had been noted, and many lords would place pretty daughters by his side at feasts or when hunting, but Jaehaerys ignored them. Lord [[House Blackbar|Blackbar]]'s youngest daughter even attempted to sit in his lap and feed him a grape, but Jaehaerys brushed her aside, saying that he had a queen and no taste for [[paramour]]s.

He remained on his progress throughout the year, until a visit to Oldtown, where he met with his daughter Septa [[Maegelle Targaryen|Maegelle]]. She finally helped reconcile the royal couple, telling Jaehaerys they should both be together for the upcoming wedding of their granddaughter Princess [[Rhaenys Targaryen (daughter of Aemon)|Rhaenys]]. A fortnight later, the king returned to King's Landing, and the queen returned from Dragonstone, and afterward they were as close as they had been before.{{ref|fab|The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain}}
