==History==
Prince Lewyn was the younger brother of the former ruling [[Princess of Dorne (mother of Doran)|Princess of Dorne]]. Lewyn was among the [[Dornishmen]] who came to court at [[King's Landing]] with his niece, Princess [[Elia Martell]],{{Ref|TWOIAF|5|1}} who was betrothed in early {{Date|279}} and [[married]] a year later in {{Date|280}}, to Prince [[Rhaegar Targaryen]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|4|17}} He became a confidante of Rhaegar's.{{Ref|TWOIAF|5|1}} Lewyn was appointed a member of the [[Kingsguard]] in the service of King [[Aerys II Targaryen]] at an unknown time.

Lewyn was present at the [[tourney at Harrenhal]] in {{Date|281}}.{{Ref|ASOS|44}}

During [[Robert's Rebellion]], Aerys used Lewyn's niece, Elia, as a hostage against him, and sent him to command the ten thousand Dornishmen that were to join Rhaegar's force that was assembling to take on Lord [[Robert I Baratheon|Robert Baratheon]].{{Ref|ASOS|37}} Lewyn died during the [[Battle of the Trident]] in {{Date|283}} at the hands of Ser [[Lyn Corbray]], although he was mortally wounded before his final duel with Lyn.{{Ref|AFFC|23}}

[[Dorne]] was incensed by the deaths of Lewyn and Elia during the war, and Prince [[Oberyn Martell]] tried to raise the kingdom to support [[Viserys Targaryen]], the surviving son of the late Aerys. In response, Lord [[Jon Arryn]] travelled to [[Sunspear]] the year after Robert took the throne ({{Date|284}}) to return the bones of Lewyn and was able to broker a peace with [[Doran Martell]], the ruling Prince of Dorne.{{Ref|ASOS|38}}

[[Arianne Martell]] recalls her great-uncle fondly, remembering when she was a little girl how her great-uncle Lewyn would tower over her and tickle her till she could barely breathe from laughter.{{Ref|AFFC|13}}

It was a closely held secret that Prince Lewyn kept a [[paramour]] despite the Kingsguard oaths of chastity.{{Ref|AFFC|13}} Ser [[Barristan Selmy]] and his other sworn brothers were aware of this but kept their sworn brother's secret.{{Ref|ADWD|59}}
