When [[Benjen Stark]] goes missing while ranging [[beyond the Wall]], Ser [[Jaremy Rykker]] leads two sweeps from [[Castle Black]] and [[Qhorin Halfhand]] ventures forth from the [[Shadow Tower]]. They are unable to find the [[First Ranger]], with the marks he left on trees stopping in the stony highlands in the northwest.{{ref|AGOT|26}}

[[Craster]] informs [[Jeor Mormont]], [[Lord Commander of the Night's Watch]], that [[Mance Rayder]], [[King-Beyond-the-Wall]], is gathering the bulk of the [[free folk]] into the Frostfangs. Jeor does not expect the wildlings to remain in the inhospitable mountains for long.{{Ref|ACOK|23}}

Qhorin's rangers defeat [[Alfyn Crowkiller]]'s wildlings, although a few flee toward the Frostfangs. A captured wildling informs Qhorin that Mance is searching for something to help bring down the [[Wall]].{{ref|ACOK|43}}

The [[Night's Watch]] send three scouting missions to search for Mance: one up the [[Giant's Stair]] under [[Jarman Buckwell]], one to probe the [[Milkwater]] under [[Thoren Smallwood]], and one into the [[Skirling Pass]] under Qhorin Halfhand.{{Ref|ACOK|43}}

In the Skirling Pass, [[Jon Snow]] and [[Stonesnake]] are sent ahead to dispatch wildling lookouts. They kill [[Orell]]{{ref|ASOS|15}} and another man, but Jon releases [[Ygritte]] instead of executing her.{{Ref|ACOK|51}} Qhorin decides they should turn back after the rangers are discovered by the [[eagle]] of [[Orell]], who was a [[skinchanger]], and the Halfhand leaves [[Dalbridge]] to cover their retreat.{{Ref|ACOK|53}}

The eagle follows the black brothers as they head back.{{ref|ACOK|53}} Qhorin sends [[Ebben]] ahead on horseback and Stonesnake afoot up the mountainside, but Ebben is slain by [[Rattleshirt]]'s band of wildlings. Recognizing that they will be overtaken, the Halfhand commands Jon to yield to the wildlings and do whatever is asked of him in order to gain their trust and learn what they are searching for. When they are apprehended by Rattleshirt, Ygritte, and other free folk, Jon yields as he was instructed and kills Qhorin.{{Ref|ACOK|68}}
