===Early life===
Born at [[Casterly Rock]], Gerold Lannister was the youngest son of Lord [[Damon Lannister (lord)|Damon Lannister]], the Grey Lion and his wife, Lady [[Cerissa Brax]].{{Ref|AWOIAF|Gerold Lannister}}{{Ref|TWOIAF|10|3}} After Damon passed in {{Date|210}}, Gerold's older brother Ser [[Tybolt Lannister|Tybolt]] became the [[Lord of Casterly Rock]].{{Ref|TWOIAF|7|6|1}} By {{Date|211}}, Gerold was a suitor to Lady [[Rohanne Webber]] of [[Coldmoat]], and she was fond of his letters. However, she believed Gerold would never willingly forsake the pleasures of [[Lannisport]] and the splendor of [[Casterly Rock]] for some little lordship, as he wielded more influence at Casterly Rock as his brother's advisor than he could ever hope for as the husband of Lady Rohanne.{{Ref|TSS}} Rohanne Webber would eventually marry [[Eustace Osgrey|another]],{{Ref|TSS}} but some time after the passing of her fifth husband, she and Gerold were married after all.{{Ref|TWOIAF|7|6|1}} Although Gerold had no children by his first wife, Lady [[Alysanne Farman]], he would have four sons with Rohanne: [[Tywald Lannister|Tywald]], [[Tion Lannister|Tion]], [[Tytos Lannister|Tytos]] (born {{Date|220}}), and [[Jason Lannister (son of Gerold)|Jason Lannister]] (born {{Date|229}}).{{Ref|TWOIAF|7|6|1}}{{Ref|TWOIAF|10|3}}

Tybolt passed away in {{Date|212}} under suspicious circumstances, and his young daughter [[Cerelle Lannister (daughter of Tybolt)|Cerelle]] succeeded him as Lady of Casterly Rock, with Gerold serving as her [[regent]]. However, in less than a year, Lady Cerelle also passed away. The suddenness of Cerelle's death led to rumors that Gerold had murdered his niece,{{Ref|TWOIAF|7|6|1}} the most common tale claiming that he had smothered her with a pillow.
