Gilly hopes to breed [[rabbit]]s in a hutch at [[Craster's Keep]]. When the [[Night's Watch]] stops at Craster's during their [[great ranging]], however, [[Ghost]], the [[direwolf]] of [[Jon Snow]], breaks the hutch and kills the two rabbits, scaring the girl.{{Ref|ACOK|23}}

The pregnant Gilly fears that if she gives birth to a son, Craster will sacrifice him to the [[Others]]. Gilly befriends and seeks help from [[Samwell Tarly]], who lends the girl his black cloak so she can approach Jon.
