Eddard's heir [[Robb Stark|Robb]], now the [[King in the North]], sends Ser [[Cleos Frey]] as an envoy during the [[War of the Five Kings]]. Robb has Cleos ask for the return of Ice, but [[Tyrion Lannister]], the acting [[Hand of the King]], informs Cleos that the greatsword will only be returned when Robb makes peace with the [[Iron Throne]].{{ref|ACOK|25}}

During the [[Battle of the Blackwater]], Sansa is scared when she sees Ilyn in the [[Queen's Ballroom]] of [[Maegor's Holdfast]] with the highborn women of the capital.{{ref|ACOK|57}} Queen Cersei claims the knight is there for protection,{{ref|ACOK|57}} but she later reveals she wants Ilyn to execute Sansa and herself if [[Stannis Baratheon]] is victorious in the battle.{{ref|ACOK|60}} Cersei has Ilyn execute three servants who attempt to flee the castle. When he returns, Sansa notices blood drying on Ice, as Ilyn has not yet cleaned the blade.{{ref|ACOK|60}} Stannis is defeated and forced to retreat.{{ref|ACOK|62}} When Joffrey receives prisoners in the throne room after the battle, the king orders Ilyn to behead a [[House Florent|Florent]] bastard who remains loyal to Stannis.{{ref|ACOK|65}}
