Garin's Curse
Garin's Curse is said to be a lingering curse that haunts the Sorrows. It is said to have been called down by Prince Garin the Great, a historical figure of the Rhoynar who beseeched Mother Rhoyne.
Legend
According to legend, the men of Volantis and Valyria hung Garin the Great, Prince of Chroyane, in a golden cage during the Rhoynish Wars and mocked him as he called upon Mother Rhoyne to destroy them. That very night, the waters rose and drowned the invaders of Chroyane. From that day, the fallen conquerors are said to have remained beneath the waters of the Sorrows, with their flesh turned to stone and their cold breath causing thick fog.[1]
Lomas Longstrider wrote that the Sorrows, the ruins of Chroyane, have been haunted by wayward travelers infected with greyscale.[2]
Some believe that the Doom of Valyria was Garin's curse finally coming to fruition.[3]

A Dance with Dragons
Tyrion Lannister and the crew of the Shy Maid travel through the foggy ruins of Chroyane in the Sorrows. Haldon warns of Garin's Curse because of the thick fog. When "Hugor Hill" (Tyrion) insists that Garin's Curse is only greyscale, Ysilla tells the story of the Valyrians and Volantenes who opposed Garin the Great. Their boat sails unscathed beneath the Bridge of Dream, but despite sailing with the current of the Rhoyne and rivers only running one way, they appear to approach the Bridge of Dream again shortly afterward.[1]
