The Anniversary Tourney was a great tourney in King's Landing[1] in 272 AC.
History
[edit]The tourney was held in the capital to celebrate the tenth year of King Aerys II Targaryen's reign.[1] During its proceedings, the king drunkenly insulted Lady Joanna Lannister, the wife of Hand of the King Tywin Lannister, by asking if her breasts had been ruined by breastfeeding her children, Cersei and Jaime. Aerys refused to allow Tywin to resign as Hand the following day.[2]
Behind the scenes
[edit]The World of Ice & Fire has erroneously stated that this tournament was "hosted by Tywin in Lannisport in celebration of Aerys II's tenth year upon the Iron Throne", but this was due to a confusion with the tourney in honor of Prince Viserys's birth, which was hosted by Tywin at Lannisport in 276 AC.[3]. The lavish prizes offered in the tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC were an attempt by Lord Walter Whent to outdo Tywin's tourney in 276 AC.[3]
