The second Clegane was the father of Gregor and Sandor Clegane. His first name is unknown.

History

Clegane was born the son of the kennelmaster at Casterly Rock. One autumn year, his father saved Lord Tytos Lannister from a lioness. Tytos rewarded the kennelmaster with a knighthood, lands and a towerhouse, and took his son as his squire.[1]

Some time later, Clegane inherited the keep and lands from his father.[2] When his son Sandor was seven years old, and his son Gregor was twelve, a woodcarver set up shop in the village by the keep, and gifted toys to the Cleganes to buy favor. Sandor desired his brother's gift, a jointed wooden knight, and took it to play with, though he was afraid of what the brutal Gregor might do. When Gregor found him, he shoved the side of Sandor's face into the burning coals of a brazier and held him there while he screamed, and only three grown men could drag Gregor off his brother. The Cleganes' maester attempted to heal the burns with ointments, and Ser Clegane explained the burns to others by claiming that his son's bedding had caught fire.[2]

However, there are still rumors that Gregor was involved in Sandor's burning. Ser Clegane's young daughter died mysteriously, and Gregor is rumored to have been involved with that as well. Finally, the knight himself died in a hunting accident, and it is implied he was actually killed by his son Gregor. Sandor left home the day of his father's death to become a sworn sword of House Lannister, and he has never returned.[3]
