The founder of House Dondarrion was a messenger who was raised to lordship by a Storm King.
History
The Dondarrion line was founded when a messenger from the Storm King was ambushed by two Dornishmen while riding on a stormy night. An arrow killed his horse, and his sword broke when he fell. Though he thought he was doomed, a bright purple lightning bolt suddenly struck the Dornishmen, killing both. Because the rider was able to deliver his crucial message, the Storm King raised him to lordship, and he became the first Dondarrion, hence why their sigil depicts a forked purple lightning bolt.[1]

During the Hand's tourney, Lord Beric Dondarrion carries a black shield slashed by lightning.[2]
A Storm of Swords
Beric Dondarrion becomes known as "the lightning lord" for his sigil,[3] and it is said he strikes suddenly, like lightning from a clear sky.[4]
