The Gate is a mummers' playhouse owned by Izembaro in Braavos. It is located by the edge of Drowned Town, between the Outer Harbor and the Purple Harbor and near the Ship.[1]

History

The Gate was built by Izembaro on the flooded stone foundation of a warehouse after it burned down; Izembaro was able to acquire the land for cheap. The Gate's stage developed a tilt as the building settled.[1]

Layout

Commoners such as sailors, peddlers, and prostitutes patronize the pit of the cavernous playhall. The first and third levels of the balconies are for respectable folk like merchants and captains. The fourth balcony, the highest, is where the seats are cheapest, so it is preferred by bravos. The second level, which has private boxes, is where the rich and mighty have the best views and can be catered to by servants. The second level is rarely full, however, as powerful Braavosi are more inclined to visit the Dome or the Blue Lantern. Although the Sealord of Braavos has never visited the Gate, Izembaro named the grandest private box after the ruler.[1]

Water snakes nest in the flooded cellar, and the mummers' costumes are prone to mildew.[1]
