A Game of Thrones
When Lord Eddard Stark complains to Lord Petyr Baelish that his investigation into Jon Arryn's death is hindered by the fact that Lysa Arryn took most of her household back to the Vale, Petyr tells him that four members of the late Hand's household are still in King's Landing, including Jon's potboy, who had been discharged from service for theft. Warning that Eddard is watched by spies of Lord Varys and Queen Cersei Lannister, Petyr advises the new Hand of the King to send someone he trusts to question the potboy, rather than go himself.[1]
Ned thus sends Jory Cassel, his captain of the guard, to question Jon's potboy, now cordwainer, who was only able to provide lots of kitchen gossip, including that Lord Arryn had been quarreling with the king, Lord Arryn was sending his son and heir to be fostered on Dragonstone, and that Lord Stannis Baratheon had accompanied Lord Arryn to visit a master armorer about elaborate new armor wrought in pale silver with a blue jasper falcon and a mother-of-pearl moon on the breast.[2]
Quotes
The potboy, now cordwainer, had never exchanged so much as a word with Lord Jon, but he was full of oddments of kitchen gossip.[2]
—thoughts of Eddard Stark
