Some five hundred years ago,^[2] Lord Commander Runcel forgot his vows and attempted to bequeath Castle Black and the Night's Watch to his bastard son. Runcel's ambitions almost destroyed the Night's Watch,^[1] but his efforts to subvert the traditional electoral system of the Night's Watch ultimately failed.^[2]
