Simon Toyne was the leader of the Kingswood Brotherhood, an outlaw group active during the reign of King Aerys II Targaryen.
Character
According to Ser Barristan Selmy, Simon was infamous.[2]
History
Simon was a member of House Toyne, a family fallen into disgrace after altercations with House Targaryen. Under Simon's leadership, the Kingswood Brotherhood achieved no small measure of infamy as they kidnapped various nobles and evaded capture. According to Ser Barristan Selmy, Simon entered a tourney at Storm's End as a mystery knight, where he was unhorsed by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen; a semi-canon source, however, states that Barristan may have misremembered the tourney.[3]
The forest folk of the kingswood had looked to Simon and his outlaws for protection. When Ser Arthur Dayne led a campaign into the forest, however, the Sword of the Morning gained the support of these smallfolk by paying them for supplies, bringing their grievances to King Aerys II Targaryen, and allowing them to gain some additional rights.[4] When Barristan rescued Lady Jeyne Swann and her septa from the outlaws, he defeated the Smiling Knight and slew Simon.[5]
Ulmer of the Kingswood has often told the men at Castle Black about his adventures with Simon and other outlaws from the Brotherhood.[6]

Arstan Whitebeard tells Daenerys Targaryen of her brother Rhaegar's defeat of Simon in a tourney at Storm's End.[2]
Ser Jaime Lannister reads in the White Book about Ser Barristan Selmy's slaying of Simon, and he recalls his own experiences with the Kingswood Brotherhood.[5]

At Darry, Jaime explains how Ser Arthur Dayne had turned the smallfolk of the kingswood against Simon and his outlaws.[4]
