The wormways[1][2][3] or wormwalks[4] are subterranean tunnels at Castle Black.
Layout
[edit]The wormways are a maze of tunnels which link the keeps and towers of Castle Black.[4][3] The tunnels are lit by candles placed in wall niches.[3] The wormwalks have steep stone steps which reach the surface.[2] The vaults of Castle Black open onto wormwalks.[4]
Wormwalks are used infrequently during summertime, but they become invaluable during winter when snowfall makes travel difficult above ground.[4][3]

Quotes
[edit]All of Castle Black was connected underground by a maze of tunnels that the brothers called the wormways. It was dark and gloomy underneath the earth, so the wormways were little used in summer, but when the winter winds began to blow and the snows began to fall, the tunnels became the quickest way to move about the castle.[3]
