Layout
The armory is warmed by chunks of coal which burn in iron braziers at each end of the long room. Equipment like swords and scabbards can be hung from hooks in the stone wall,[2] and spears are stored on racks.[3] The room also contains benches.[2] The armory has a whetstone and bellows for the armorer, Donal Noye.[4]
A steep flight of stone steps descends from the back of the armory to the wormways, subterranean tunnels which connect the towers and keeps of Castle Black.[5]
Below the armory is one of the vaults of Castle Black, a cavernous stone cellar divided by two rows of square stone pillars. The hall has barrel-vaulted ceilings, tables, and great casks of wine and ale along the walls. A potbellied kettle can be found by a hearth in the corner.[3]
Donel has a pair of modest rooms[6] behind the armory,[7] past the forge.[8]

When Samwell Tarly arrives at Castle Black, Ser Alliser Thorne, the master-at-arms, has Sam don black equipment from the armory.[4]

Quotes
The yard is for fighting. Keep your quarrels out of my armory, or I'll make them my quarrels. You won't like that.[2]
—Donal Noye to Jon Snow
Three-quarters of the village had taken Jon's warning to heart and come to Castle Black for refuge. Noye had decreed that every man still spry enough to hold a spear or swing an axe would help defend the barricade, else they could damn well go home and take their chances with the Thenns. He had emptied the armory to put good steel in their hands; big double-bladed axes, razor-sharp daggers, longswords, maces, spiked morningstars. Clad in studded leather jerkins and mail hauberks, with greaves for their legs and gorgets to keep their heads on their shoulders, a few of them even looked like soldiers.[1]

Donal Noye's old armory was still dark and silent, however, and Jon's rooms back of the cold forge were darker still.[8]
