Craster was a wildling, the master of Craster's Keep beyond the Wall. He has nineteen wives, many of whom are his own daughters, including Gilly. He was one of the few wildlings not openly hostile to the Night's Watch; although he showed the Watch no malice and offered sanctuary to those north of the Wall on rangings, he was regarded as a tenuous ally at best, due to the fact of his incest, and the strong suspicion that he sacrificed his male children to the Others.
