Dirk is a ranger of the Night's Watch.

Although Dirk does not appear in the television adaptation Game of Thrones, the character Karl Tanner, played by Burn Gorman, is based on both Dirk and Clubfoot Karl.[2]

Dirk takes his name from his favorite weapon, which he silently sharpens every night.[3]
