Clubfoot Karl[1][2] is a ranger[3] or steward[4][2] of the Night's Watch.

Although Clubfoot Karl does not appear in the television adaptation Game of Thrones, the character Karl Tanner, played by Burn Gorman, is based on both Clubfoot Karl and Dirk.[5]

Appearance

Karl is a large man with a clubfoot.[3]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

Clubfoot Karl is a member of the great ranging, the force that leaves Castle Black in search of the wildlings. One of the conspirators who intend to kill Lord Commander Jeor Mormont near the Fist of the First Men, Karl is to cut the tethers among the horse lines. The conspirators are interrupted by the fight at the Fist, however.[1]

Karl is among the survivors who make it back to Craster's Keep. After complaining about food provided by Craster and his wives, Karl supports Dirk during the mutiny at Craster's Keep. Karl trips over the wounded Ser Byam Flint during the turmoil.[3]

A Feast for Crows

Clubfoot Karl remains at Craster's Keep after the betrayal, along with eight other former members of the Night's Watch.[6]

A Dance With Dragons

While guiding Bran Stark and his friends toward the cave of the three-eyed crow, Coldhands detects the presence of men in the haunted forest; the ranger hunts them down and kills them with his ravens. Summer, Bran's direwolf, then finds five black-clad bodies in the forest; it is unknown if Clubfoot Karl is among them. Bran wakes from his skinchanging to find that Coldhands has returned with meat, claiming he found a sow.[7]
