Hoster Tully 235 AL–299 AL was the head of House Tully, Lord of Riverrun, and Lord Paramount of the Riverlands.
Appearance
In his youth he was tall and broad, had blue eyes and brown-red hair. As he got older, he got portly.[1] During the timeline of the books he is an old man sick for the last two years.[2] When he was younger, Hoster was never one to stay still. He would always be traveling somewhere.[3]
History
According to semi-canon sources, Hoster Tully served in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, making friends with Petyr Baelish`s father, which led to Peytr being fostered at Riverrun.[4]
At the time of Robert's Rebellion, Catelyn was engaged to Brandon Stark. When Brandon was killed in King's Landing, Hoster joined the rebellion and married Catelyn to Eddard Stark, Brandon’s younger brother, and Lysa to Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie. Several of his bannermen such as House Mooton, House Goodbrook and House Darry remained loyal to the Targaryens, so Hoster Tully attacked them, putting entire villages of House Goodbrook to the sword. He then fought in the Battle of the Bells where he was wounded by the Hand of the King, Ser Jon Connington.[5]
Hoster Tully had been sick since 295 AL.[6]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Hoster Tully keeps his illness a secret with the Lannisters threatening his borders and lands. He is bedridden when Riverrun is besieged by the army of Jaime Lannister. After the Battle of the Camps, Catelyn visits her father, he is more lucid at this point.
A Clash of Kings
Hoster mind continues to slip more and more, he constantly loses track of events and time happening all around him.

Family relations
Hoster has a younger brother Brynden Tully with whom he had a long standing argument because his brother refused to marry the girl Hoster chose for him. Hoster married Minisa Whent, who gave him two daughters and a son. She died in childbirth trying to give her husband a second son: the baby did not live. Hoster was deeply saddened by his wife's death and never fully recovered from her departure.
Catelyn and Edmure remember their father with love. His relationship with Lysa was more troubled. On his deathbed he thinks of her often and regrets the pain he has caused her. In her youth, Lysa was in love with Petyr Baelish and was impregnated by him. For a poor knight's son, marrying her was unthinkable so Hoster expelled Petyr and forced Lysa to abort the pregnancy. Lysa was then married to Jon Arryn who was looking for a fertile wife to give him an heir.
