Craster was a wildling, the master of Craster's Keep beyond the Wall. Once a powerful-looking man, he was nearing the end of his life. His hair was grey turning to white. He had a flat nose and a drooping mouth, which gave him a cruel look and one of his ears was missing, which he had lost to the cold. He has nineteen wives, many of whom are his own daughters, including Gilly. He was one of the few wildlings not openly hostile to the Night's Watch; although he showed the watch no malice and offered sanctuary to those North of the Wall on rangings, he was regarded as a tenuous ally at best, due to judgments of his character including incest, and the strong suspicion that he sacrificed his male children to the Others.

Craster begrudgingly allowed the Night's Watch to stay at his keep overnight during their ranging beyond the Wall.

A Storm of Swords

Craster again allowed the men of the Night's Watch who survived the attack on the Fist of the First Men an overnight stay at his keep. This time, several members of the Watch, already mutinous, believed that Craster was holding out with the meager food he offered them, and insulted him to the point of attacking, whereupon he was killed by Dirk .
