Garth of Greenaway is a ranger of the Night's Watch. He comes from Greenaway and carries a knife.[1]
Recent Events
[edit]A Storm of Swords
[edit]
Garth is among the members of the Night's Watch who accompany Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, on the great ranging. He survives the fight at the Fist and is among the survivors who make it to Craster's Keep.[1]
Garth is skeptical about Samwell Tarly having slain an Other. Garth becomes concerned when Craster beats one of his younger wives, and he thinks that Craster is hoarding apples. The blade-wielding Garth and Ollo Lophand prevent Jeor from interceding during the mutiny at Craster's Keep, and Ollo mortally stabs the Lord Commander. During the turmoil, Garth of Greenaway kills Garth of Oldtown.[1][2]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Garth remains at Craster's Keep after the betrayal, along with eight other former members of the Night's Watch.[3]
A Dance With Dragons
[edit]While guiding Bran Stark and his friends toward the cave of the three-eyed crow, Coldhands detects the presence of men in the haunted forest; the ranger hunts them down and kills them with his ravens. Summer, Bran's direwolf, then finds five black-clad bodies in the forest; it is unknown if Garth is among them. Bran wakes from his skinchanging to find that Coldhands has returned with meat, claiming he found a sow.[4]
According to a semi-canon source, Garth is killed by Others and turned into a wight.[5]
Quotes
[edit]Jeor: Be quiet, all of you. This is folly.
Garth: Apples. Barrels and barrels of crisp autumn apples. There are apple trees out there, I saw 'em.[1]—Jeor Mormont and Garth
