Jafer Flowers is a ranger of the Night's Watch. He is a bastard from the Reach, judging by his surname.

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Jafer is a member of the ranging party led by Benjen Stark to discover what happened to Ser Waymar Royce.[2]

When Jon Snow says his vows in the weirwood grove in the haunted forest, Ghost brings to him a severed hand.[3] The hand is then stored in a jar of vinegar in Maester Aemon's chambers.[2]

Bass's dogs refuse to follow the scent of the hand, so the Night's Watch use Ghost as a tracker instead. The party finds the bodies of Jafer and Othor in the haunted forest; Ghost had earlier torn off the right hand from Jafer's corpse.[2] Upon inspection, his death had been caused by an axe blow to the neck; Dywen thinks the killing blow was caused by Othor's axe. Both corpses have white flesh and black hands.[2]

The bodies of the two men are brought back to Castle Black, but they rise as wights in the night and attack the Night's Watch. Jafer's wight kills Ser Jaremy Rykker and four other men. Even after Jaremy hacks off Jafer's head, the wight draws the knight's own dagger and stabs him to death. Jafer's body is eventually hacked nearly into pieces.[4]

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, sends Ser Alliser Thorne to King's Landing to show Jafer's hand to the Iron Throne.[4]

A Clash of Kings

Tyrion Lannister, acting Hand of the King, keeps Alliser waiting when the envoy arrives at the capital.[5] By the time the skeptical small council agrees to see Alliser, Jafer's hand has rotted away.[1]

Quotes

Strength and courage did not avail much against foemen who would not fall because they were already dead; even arms and armor offered small protection.[4]

—thoughts of Jon Snow

Alliser: I brought Jared's hand, torn from his corpse by the bastard's wolf.

Petyr: And where is this charming token?
Alliser: It ... rotted to pieces while I waited, unheard. There's naught left to show but bones.
Tyrion: Lord Baelish, buy our brave Ser Alliser a hundred spades to take back to the Wall with him.
Alliser: Spades?

Tyrion: If you bury your dead, they won't come walking.[1]
