A Game of Thrones
When Lord Eddard Stark complains to Lord Petyr Baelish that his investigation into Jon Arryn's death is hindered by the fact that Lysa Arryn took most of her household back to the Vale, Petyr tells him that four members of the late Hand's household are still in King's Landing, including Jon's stableboy, who had joined the City Watch of King's Landing. Warning that Eddard is watched by spies of Lord Varys and Queen Cersei Lannister, Petyr advises the new Hand of the King to send someone he trusts to question the stableboy, rather than go himself.[1]
Ned thus sends Jory Cassel, his captain of the guard, to question the stableboy, now watchman, who claims that both the lads and the horses were always pleased to see Jon, the former because Jon always gave them a copper on their name days, and the latter because Jon would bring them carrots and apples. He also swears that Lord Arryn was as strong as a man half his age and often went riding with Lord Stannis Baratheon. He also claims that Jon and Stannis visited a brothel together, but he does not know which one.[2]
Quotes
