The master of the games or master of games is the official who enrolls participants and selects pairings for jousting matches at tourneys.[1] This position is usually carried out by the steward of the hosting lord.[2][1]
History
[edit]Whever he took part in tourneys, Ser Uthor Underleaf would bribe the master of the games to get paired up so that he would face the opponents he preferred—big men, older champions past their prime, and "village heroes"—where the odds would appear to be against him.[1]
During the tourney at Ashford Meadow, the position was occupied by Plummer, the steward for Lord Ashford.[2]
During the wedding tourney at Whitewalls, the position was occupied by Cosgrove, the steward for Lord Ambrose Butterwell.[1]

[edit]During the Hand's tourney in King's Landing, the position was most likely occupied by the royal steward of King Robert I Baratheon. During the jousts, Ser Hugh of the Vale is killed by Ser Gregor Clegane. Hugh's death at the hands of a Lannister bannerman makes Lord Eddard Stark wonder whether Hugh has died because of his attempt to question him, and if so, who had helped the Lannisters by selecting this pairing for a joust, but he doubts that he will ever find out the truth.[3]
