The outer yard[1][2] or outer ward,[3][4] occasionally called the Great Yard,[5] is a yard in the Red Keep.
Layout
[edit]The outer yard is found near the main gate of the Red Keep and near the serpentine steps.[1][3] Stables are found near the outer ward.[6]
History
[edit]Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and her spouse, Prince Daemon Targaryen, landed in the outer yard of the Red Keep during the fall of King's Landing.[7] A stable in the outer ward was emptied of horses and used to house Syrax, Rhaenyra's dragon.[8] During the Hour of the Wolf, Lord Cregan Stark, Hand of the King to Aegon III Targaryen, passed judgement on condemned men brought up from the dungeons to the outer ward.[9]
Recent Events

[edit]From his chambers in the Tower of the Hand, Lord Eddard Stark looks across the Great Yard and sees candlelight in the windows of Littlefinger's chambers.[5]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Tyrion Lannister limps across the outer yard and speaks with his sister, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, by the main gate.[1]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Tyrion and his squire Podrick Payne walk amid the Tyrell canvas and silk pavilions in the outer yard while traveling to the Tower of the Hand to visit Tyrion's father, Lord Tywin.[3]
Queen Cersei details the plans for the wedding feast of King Joffrey I Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell, where the middle and outer wards would be tented in silk for those who could not be accommodated inside the Great Hall.[10]
Tyrion's trial by combat between Prince Oberyn Martell and Ser Gregor Clegane is held in the Red Keep's outer ward, where the Mountain smashes the head of the Red Viper with his bare hands.[6]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]During the wedding of King Tommen I Baratheon and Margaery, an intoxicated Cersei, who had fifty pots of wildfire from the Alchemists' Guild placed in the Tower of the Hand, interrupts the feast to have the attendees accompany her outside to the outer yard, so that Lord Hallyne of the alchemists can burn the tower.[11]
