Ronnel Arryn was a knight of House Arryn and was the younger brother of Lord Jon Arryn. He was wed to a noblewoman from House Belmore. They had one son, Elbert Arryn.[2]
History
After Jon ascended to the lordship he named Ronnel as the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon.[3] He married a woman from House Belmore but bedded her only a few times before dying of a bad belly himself. Ronnel was dying at roughly the same time as his son Elbert was born.[2]
Recent events
A Clash of Kings
Discussing the deaths of Brandon and Rickard Stark, Jaime Lannister recalls that the four men who rode to King's Landing with Brandon were sons of lords. Catelyn Stark correctly identifies one of these men, Elbert Arryn, as the nephew and heir of lord Jon Arryn, and says that the men's fathers were summoned to King's Landing to face the accusations of treason against their sons and were killed by the order of King Aerys II Targaryen.[4] However, Ronnel Arryn, Elbert's father, was long dead by this point.[2]
A Storm of Swords
Catelyn Stark thinks of her sister Lysa's hasty marriage to Jon Arryn, who was without an heir after the murder of his brother's son.[5]
A Feast for Crows
Discussing how the Gates of the Moon has historically been an Arryn holding and its Keepers often of that House, Nestor Royce mentions that Jon Arryn named his brother Ronnel as Keeper of the Gates of the Moon after he ascended to Lord of the Eyrie.[3]
Petyr Baelish explains the recent history of House Arryn to Sansa Stark. He mentions Ronnel Arryn, his marriage, his death, and the birth of his son.[2]
Quotes
Petyr: Lord Jasper's younger son, Ser Ronnel Arryn, wed a Belmore girl, but only rang her once or twice before dying of a bad belly. Their son Elbert was being born in one bed even as poor Ronnel was dying in another down the hall. Are you paying close attention, sweetling?
Sansa: Yes. There was Jon and Alys and Ronnel, but Ronnel died.[2]—Petyr Baelish and Sansa Stark
