The Years of Shame were a period in the history of the Summer Isles, which lasted for two centuries. During this time, native princes sold defeated rivals to slavers from the Ghiscari Empire, the Valyrian Freehold and the Basilisk Isles.[1]
The Years of Shame ended when Xanda Qo, Princess of Sweet Lotus Vale and a former slave, united the isles under her rule. Under her rule, swan ships were introduced and sailors employed goldenheart bows to resist encroaching slaver raids.[1]
