Kem is a young sellsword of the Second Sons. He is from Flea Bottom.[1]
History
Kem once saw Tywin Lannister riding up a hill in King's Landing. His men had red cloaks and little lions on their helms. Kem liked the helms. He tells Tyrion that he never liked the Hand though, as he sacked the city and smashed the host that Kem was in on the Blackwater.
Kem claims that he and his brother, Kennet, fought in the army of Stannis Baratheon during the Battle of the Blackwater. He tried to escape after the appearance of Renly Baratheon's ghost, but at the ships a knight said to him “Where’s your spear boy? We got no room for cravens”, and they left Kem and thousands more.
After the defeat of Stannis, he feared being sent to the Wall. He traveled across the narrow sea and joined up with the sellsword company the Second Sons as a means to survive.[2]

A Dance with Dragons
Kem, along with the rest of the Second Sons, went over to the Yunkai'i when Brown Ben Plumm thought Daenerys Targaryen's cause was lost.
After Tyrion Lannister joins the company, Brown Ben tells Inkpots to escort Tyrion and Penny to the wagons in order to equip them with weapons and armor. Inkpots then tells Tyrion he'll have Snatch take them to the wagons. Snatch then wistles for Kem, calls him a "fucking pisspot", and tells him to escort them to the wagons. Tyrion chats briefly with Kem on their way to the armory. He thinks every word out of Kem's mouth reeks of Flea Bottom. Tyrion asks him if he missed King's Landing. Kem replies “some”. He adds that he misses "this boy", a friend of his - but he doesn’t say who the boy is.
Kem mentions he misses the food, and his love for the bowl of brown in a certain pot shop in King's Landing, saying that no one ever made a bowl o' brown like them, so thick you could stand your spoon up in the bowl, with chucks of this and that. He asks Tyrion if he has ever had a bowl of brown. Tyrion replies "A time or two. Singers stew, I call it."
When Kem asks why its called that, Tyrion says "It tastes so good it makes me want to sing". Kem likes that and says he will ask for it the next time he gets back to Flea Bottom.
He then asks Tyrion what he misses. Tyrion thinks of Jaime, Shae, and Tysha, but replies "Wine, whores and wealth. Especially the wealth." He informs Kem that "Wealth will buy you wine and whores", and thinks privately to himself - It will also buy you swords, and the Kems to wield them.[2]
