Red King was a title wielded by House Bolton when they reigned as kings in the east of what is now the north.[1]

History

From the Dreadfort, the Red Kings ruled over land stretching from the Last River to the White Knife and the Sheepshead Hills. After the Long Night, they often fought against the Kings of Winter, the Starks of Winterfell to the west of the Dreadfort.[1] Some Red Kings are said to have worn cloaks made out of the skins of flayed Starks during the Age of Heroes.[2] Some Red Kings allied with Marsh Kings to defend against southron invaders.[1]

Rogar the Huntsman, the last Red King, eventually submitted and sent hostages to Winterfell, as the coming of the Andals to Westeros was beginning.[1] The Boltons sometimes rebelled against the Stark Kings in the North over the following centuries, with the Boltons last bending the knee "a thousand years ago".[N 1]

Quotes

Yet the bitterest foes of Winterfell were undoubtedly the Red Kings of the Dreadfort, those grim lords of House Bolton whose domains of old stretched from the Last River to the White Knife, and as far south as the Sheepshead Hills.[1]

Notes

  1. Theon Greyjoy recalls that the Boltons bent the knee to the Starks of Winterfell "a thousand years ago" (A Clash of Kings, Theon IV). It is unknown if this means one thousand years ago (seven hundred years before Aegon's Conquest) or if George R. R. Martin is being figurative.
