An archer in the service of Ser Marq Piper of House Piper is a survivor of the Red Wedding.[1] His given name is unknown.
Appearance
The archer has a beard. He wears a surcoat over ringmail and quilting. On the breast of his surcoat is sewn pink maiden dancing in a swirl of silk, the sigil of the House he serves. He also wears a kettle helm and a pair of boots that are too large for Arya but too small for the Hound. He has a dagger with a pretty pink stone in the hilt and a bow and arrows, though he loses the bow after the Twins.[1]
After the Red Wedding, his wounded left shoulder is grotesquely twisted and swollen, with pus and blood staining his whole side. His eyes are bright with fever.[1]
Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
The archer attends the wedding of Lord Edmure Tully and Lady Roslin Frey at the Twins under the banner of Ser Marq Piper of House Piper. During the wedding feast, he drinks with a northman who serves Lord Roose Bolton, and the two joke that the man and woman on their sigils should get together. When the Bolton forces turn on the other guests as part of their plot with the Freys to betray the Starks and Tullys, the northman smashes the archer's shoulder with his mace.[1]
The archer manages to escape the carnage on a horse, but is mortally wounded. At some point he loses both the horse and his bow. Sandor Clegane and Arya Stark, two other survivors of the wedding, find him in the hollow of an oak tree, slowly dying. The archer begs for wine, but the Hound can only offer water and the gift of mercy. Arya fetches the man a drink of water, and the Hound mercy kills him. Before leaving the man's body, the pair take what money and valuables the man has on him. Arya takes the man's dagger for herself.[1]
A Feast for Crows
When the kindly man tells Arya that she needs to give up her possessions to serve the Many-Faced God, Arya goes to one of the canals in Braavos and drops the dagger she took from the archer into the water.[2]
During a war council at the Siege of Riverrun, Lord Clement Piper interrogates Edwyn Frey on what happened to the five knights and twenty-five men-at-arms who accompanied Ser Marq Piper to the wedding. Edwyn claims that while some of the knights might have been kept as captive, the others got what they deserved.[3]
