The dwarf juggler was an entertainer in Tyrosh. His given name is unknown.
Appearance and Character
The dwarf was an old man.[2][1] He was bald, and had brown eyes. He may have had gold teeth, or they may have fallen out with age.[2] Because he was old, his hands were not as dexterous as they used to be, so he occasionally dropped the balls he was juggling and had to chase them, but the Tyroshi would laugh and throw him coins nevertheless.[1]
History
The juggler entertained people every day for years at the square by the Fountain of the Drunken God in Tyrosh. He was known to a pair of dwarf entertainers, Oppo and Penny.[1]
Recent Events
A Feast for Crows
In King's Landing, Queen Cersei Lannister offers a lordship to anyone who brings her the head of her dwarf brother, Tyrion Lannister,[3] who had been found guilty of the murder of her son, King Joffrey Baratheon, but escaped.[4] Cersei's bounty results in the murder of a number of innocent dwarfs and children throughout Westeros and the Free Cities.[2]
A Tyroshi bounty hunter presents Cersei with a dwarf's head on a bed of blue velvet, which Cersei immediately recognizes as not Tyrion's. The dwarf has brown eyes, whereas Tyrion's are green and black, and Cersei also notes that the dwarf is twice her brother's age and bald, and his teeth are missing. The Tyroshi protests that the dwarf has no nose, the same as Tyrion, and Cersei points out that he cut the dwarf's nose off. For the Tyroshi's fraud, Cersei has him sent to Qyburn to have his own nose cut off.[2]
A Dance with Dragons
On the Selaesori Qhoran in the Summer Sea, Penny tells Tyrion that the night he was arrested for Joffrey's murder at his wedding, she and her brother Oppo left King's Landing in fear someone might suspect them of being involved. They went to Tyrosh, which they hoped was far enough away, and where they knew another dwarf, the juggler. One morning, they heard that the juggler had been murdered and his body was found at the Temple of Trios. He had been cut into three parts, each part placed into one of the mouths of the statue of Trios by the temple doors. However, when the parts were sewn back together, his head was missing.[1]
Penny blames Tyrion for the old man's death, as she does for Oppo, who was also murdered by Cersei's bounty hunters. Tyrion says he is sorry for both of their deaths, but the blame is on Cersei and her bounty hunters, not him. Penny throws her wine in his face, and leaves the room.[1]
Quotes
Your head may have glass eyes, but I do not. There are gargoyles on Dragonstone that look more like the Imp than this creature.[2]
—Cersei Lannister, to the Tyroshi
Tyroshi: An honest mistake. One dwarf looks so much like another, and... Your Grace will observe, he has no nose...
Cersei: He has no nose because you cut it off.[2]—the Tyroshi and Cersei Lannister
Penny: Are you sorry about the juggler too?
Tyrion: I never knew your juggler existed until this very moment... but yes, I am sorry he is dead.
Tyrion: His blood is on my sister's hands, and the hands of the brutes who killed him.[1]
Penny: He died for you. His blood is on your hands.
—Penny and Tyrion Lannister
My hands... my hands are crusted with old blood, aye. Call me kinslayer, and you won't be wrong. Kingslayer, I'll answer to that one as well. [...] But I have never killed a juggler, nor a dwarf, and I am not to blame for what happened to your bloody brother.[1]
—Tyrion Lannister, to Penny
