Gold is a prized metal, used as currency and ornamentation. Gilded objects have a thin coating of gold, and cloth-of-gold is fabric woven with gold. Red gold and rose gold are alloys of gold with copper, and white gold is an alloy of gold with a white metal, usually nickel or silver.[1] Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver.

The well-to-do might drink from gold goblets[2][3] and cups[4] and eat from gold plates[5][6] and gilded bowls.[7] Gold can be used as replacement teeth.[8][9]

Maesters are rewarded with gold chains for the study of money and accounts.[10] Maester Luwin keeps a small silvered looking glass in an ornate golden frame.[11] Archmaester Ryam's ring, rod, and mask are yellow gold.[12]

King Robert I Baratheon's doublet depicts the Baratheon stag in golden thread.[13] Prince Joffrey Baratheon has a slim coronet made of gold and sapphires.[14] The youth's longsword, Lion's Tooth, has a gold lion's head pommel.[15]

House Lannister is especially fond of gold, as it is the source of their wealth. Queen Cersei Lannister has a golden ring with an emerald the size of a pigeon's egg,[16] while Ser Jaime Lannister wears gilded steel plate[17] and wields a gilded sword.[15] Cersei owns an ornate carved-and-gilded pleasure barge.[18] Tyrion Lannister has a doublet covered with golden studs in the shape of lions' heads.[19] Their father, Lord Tywin Lannister, has a longsword with a golden pommel,[20] decorates his armor with three miniature lions in gold, and has greaves and gauntlets inlaid with ornate gold scrollwork. Tywin's greatcloak is cloth-of-gold,[21] and his horse's armor is gilded.[22] His brother, Ser Kevan Lannister, uses a golden lion's head brooch.[23] Lannister guardsmen have golden lions atop their helms.[24][25] The Golden Gallery within Casterly Rock has gilded decorations and walls,[26] and the Goldroad connects the Rock and Lannisport with King's Landing.[27]

Ser Brynden Tully has brooches depicting a black fish in gold and obsidian[28] and gold and jet,[29] while Lord William Mooton uses a red-gold salmon.[30] A crest of golden roses decorates the helm of Ser Loras Tyrell,[31] who also clasps his cloak with a soft gold rose with jade leaves.[32] Ser Boros Blount uses a gold lion brooch with ruby eyes.[33] Ser Meryn Trant also clasps his cloak with a golden lion, wears enameled scales chased with gold, and has a golden sunburst on his helm.[34] Ser Arys Oakheart uses a golden leaf at his clasp,[35] while Lord Monford Velaryon wears a white gold seahorse[36] and Lord Wyman Manderly has a golden trident.[37] The helm of Lord Renly Baratheon has gold antlers.[15] The breastplate of Lord Alester Florent depicts a red gold fox,[38] and that of Lord Antario Jast is inlaid with three golden lions.[39] Lord Robert Arryn has a chain of gold and sapphires.[40] Victarion Greyjoy wears a great cloth-of-gold cape in the shape of a kraken.[41] The Horn of Herrock prized by House Kenning of Kayce is banded with old gold.[42] The Griffin Seat of House Connington is gilded.[43]

The Spear Tower at Sunspear is crowned with a spear of gilded steel, while the Tower of the Sun has a dome of gold and leaded glass.[44] One of the high seats at Sunspear has the Martell spear inlaid in gold upon its back.[44] The gilded helm of Prince Oberyn Martell has a copper disc to represent the sun of Dorne, and his shield depicts the arms of House Martell in red gold, yellow gold, white gold, and copper.[45] Tyene Sand embroiders with a pair of golden needles, and Nymeria Sand binds her hair with red-gold wire.[44]

High Septons often wear crowns of spun gold and crystal.[46][7] Melisandre wears a red gold choker with a ruby on her neck.[36] Gold coins are featured in the arms of House Payne.[47]

Squires might receive golden spurs when they are granted knighthood.[48] The City Watch of King's Landing are known as the gold cloaks because of their woolen cloaks dyed gold.[49][46] Officers have breastplates ornamented with four golden disks.[50] Their commander, Janos Slynt, wears ornate black-and-gold plate.[16] Some war galleys of the royal fleet have gold-painted hulls.[51][46][18] The White Book of the Kingsguard has gold hinges and fastenings.[52]

Sellswords often wear their accumulated wealth, such as gold rings, on their person.[53][54] The cloth-of-gold tent of the Golden Company's captain-general is surrounded by a ring of pikes topped with the gilded skulls of previous captains-general.[53]

Khal Drogo binds his thick mustachios with gold and bronze rings.[55] He also wears gold bells in his braid and a heavy belt of solid gold medallions.[56] Daario Naharis paints his pointed mustachios gold,[57] and the hilts of his arakh and stiletto are nude golden women.[57] Malazza wears a black breastplate with an inlaid gold harpy.[58]

Tokars of Slaver's Bay can have gold fringes,[59] and some slaves wear gilded iron collars with tiny bells.[58] Hizdahr zo Loraq binds his beard with gold rings.[9] The Temple of the Graces in Meereen has a golden dome,[60] and the throne within the city's Great Pyramid depicts a harpy in gilded wood.[60] Elephants in Meereen can have their tusks bobbed and gilded.[54] Harpy's gold is a plant along Slaver's Bay.[61] The innermost gates of Qarth are studded with golden eyes.[62]

Yi Ti is ruled by god-emperors of the Golden Empire. YiTish princes are said to live in houses of solid gold. Mengo Quen ruled from a palace covered decorated in gold leaf and with gold furnishings[63] The Lengii long prevented outsiders from mining their gold.[64] Many merchants and travellers venture to Asshai seeking gold from the Shadow Lands.[65]

Followers of the Old Way among the ironborn dislike paying with gold, preferring to instead pay the iron price.[66] Dagmer Cleftjaw wears gold, silver, and bronze rings he has claimed from others.[67]

The silver-gold hair of House Targaryen set them apart from common men.[68]

The Qhoyne carries gold and amber from the Axe to Dagger Lake.[69] Gold has also been found in Sothoryos[70][71] and the mountains of Ib.[72]

The Valyrian Freehold used slavery to mine gold and silver from beneath the Fourteen Flames.[73]

Houses of the westerlands have prospered from their gold and silver mines. Corlos, the first lord of House Casterly, is said to have found veins of gold within Casterly Rock,[74] and House Lannister grew rich from the Rock's red and yellow gold after the Casterlys disappeared from history.[26] The Lannisters' legendary founder, Lann the Clever, is said to have stolen gold from the sun to brighten his curly hair.[49] Nearby Lannisport has been called a golden city[74] and is known for its goldsmiths.[75] The mines of the Golden Tooth, seat of House Lefford, have also contributed to the Lannisters' prosperity.[76] House Reyne became wealthy from their gold and silver mines at Castamere.[77]

According to legend, Rowan Gold-Tree grew a tree whose bark, leaves, and fruit were yellow gold.[78]

During Nymeria's War, six Dornish kings were sent to the Wall in golden fetters.[79]

Golden coins from the Kingdom of the Reach featured the hand-shaped sigil of House Gardener on one side and the face of a king on the other.[80] Golden dragons began to be minted during the Targaryen era after Aegon's Conquest.[39]

King Aenys I Targaryen wore a golden crown instead of the Valyrian steel crown of his father, Aegon the Conqueror.[81] The lavish marriage of Dowager Queen Alyssa Velaryon to Lord Rogar Baratheon was known as the Golden Wedding.[82] The crenellations of Queenscrown were painted gold to honor Queen Alysanne Targaryen.[83]

During the Dance of the Dragons, King Aegon II Targaryen took for his sigil a golden three-headed dragon.[84] Prince Aemond Targaryen wore black armor chased with gold.[85] After the civil war, King Aegon III Targaryen donned a simply circlet of yellow gold.[86] The wealthy Isembard Arryn was known as the Gilded Falcon.[87]

The helm of Prince Aemon the Dragonknight depicted a three-headed dragon in white gold.[88] Ser Steffon Fossoway clasped his cloak with an apple made of gold and garnets.[68] After Prince Baelor Targaryen was killed in a trial of seven, his body was displayed with a gold necklace and a gold helm.[68] The armor of Lady Rohanne Webber was green enamel scale chased with gold and silver.[89] While disguised as Egg, Prince Aegon Targarye kept hidden a gold and onyx signet depicting the arms of his father, Prince Maekar Targaryen.[89] Whitewalls had marble floors and pillars veined with gold, and Lord Ambrose Butterwell had a double throne of gilded oak at the castle. During the wedding tourney at Whitewalls, Daemon II Blackfyre wore gilded ringmail.[90]

King Maekar I Targaryen wore a crown of red gold and black iron.[91] Maester Aemon and Lord Brynden Rivers sailed for the Wall on board the Golden Dragon.[79]

Prince Rhaegar Targaryen wore black plate over golden ringmail during the tournament in honor of Viserys's birth.[92]

During the Sack of King's Landing, Ser Jaime Lannister slew King Aerys II Targaryen with his gilded sword.[15]

As a wedding present, Gerion Lannister gave King Robert I Baratheon a gilded dagger with an ivory grip and a sapphire on the pommel.[93] Germund Botley claimed a gilded breastplate from a Lannister captain during Greyjoy's Rebellion.[41]

A Game of Thrones

Cohollo gives Daenerys Targaryen an arakh chased in gold.[94]

Lord Renly Baratheon shows Lord Eddard Stark a miniature of Margaery Tyrell in an exquisite rose gold locklet.[49]

Ser Jaime Lannister wears his golden armor during the Hand's tourney.[14]

Khal Drogo kills Viserys Targaryen by having the gold medallions from his belt melted down and poured over the head of the exile.[56]

King Joffrey I Baratheon wears a golden crown crusted with rubies and black diamonds after succeeding to the Iron Throne with the death of King Robert I Baratheon.[95]

A Clash of Kings

As Queen Regent for Joffrey, Cersei Lannister wears a golden crown.[96] After being crowned king, Renly wears a crown of soft gold depicting a ring of roses. On its front is a stag's head made of dark green jade, with golden eyes and antlers.[31] Supporting the cause of R'hllor, Stannis Baratheon uses a crown of red gold with points fashioned in the shape of flames.[97]

Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, tears a gold chain off the neck off his son, Theon, as the youth did not acquire it by paying the iron price.[66] After the capture of Winterfell, Theon claims the title Prince of Winterfell and wears an iron crown with chunks of black diamond and nuggets of gold.[98]

The Tickler tortures smallfolk of the riverlands in search of gold and other valuables.[99]

Tyrion Lannister, the acting Hand of the King, wears a loop of solid gold hands as a chain.[19] Ser Jacelyn Bywater, the captain of Tyrion's personal guard, receives a crimson cloak patterned with golden hands.[96]

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, gifts Craster with a short-hafted battle-axe inlaid with gold scrollwork.[100]

After the Battle of Oxcross, Greatjon Umber captures several gold mines at Castamere, Nunn's Deep, and the Pendric Hills.[101]

Following the Battle of the Blackwater, King Joffrey rewards Lord Mace Tyrell and his sons, Ser Garlan and Ser Loras, with chains of roses wrought in soft yellow gold. Each necklace has a golden disc with the lion of Lannister picked out in rubies.[22]

Xaro Xhoan Daxos gives Daenerys a palanquin of ebony and gold as well as a thousand miniature carved knights with silver and gold armor.[2][2] The Tourmaline Brotherhood gives her a dragon crown with three heads carved from ivory, jade, and onyx. Its coils are yellow gold and its wings are silver.[2]

While traveling through the northern mountains, Bran Stark meets a Liddle who clasps his cloak with a gold and bronze pinecone.[102]

When Daenerys purchases the Unsullied at Astapor, Kraznys mo Nakloz gives her a whip with a dragonbone handle and a gold harpy head pommel.[59]

The brotherhood without banners confiscate gold won at the Hand's tourney by Sandor Clegane so the outlaws can purchase provisions, with Lord Beric Dondarrion giving the Hound a note promising to pay him back after the War of the Five Kings ends.[103]

Lord Tywin Lannister has Ice remade into two Valyrian steel swords with gold lions' head pommels.[93] Tywin eventually gives one to his grandson, King Joffrey, who names it Widow's Wail,[47] and the other to Jaime, his elder son. The one-handed Jaime chooses to give the sword, which he calls Oathkeeper, to Brienne of Tarth.[104] Before Joffrey weds Margaery, Prince Oberyn Martell gives the king a red gold scorpion brooch,[47] while Mace Tyrell provides Joffrey with a great golden chalice depicting the sigils of the great houses.[47] Queen Margaery wears a slim golden crown.[7] During the wedding feast, Hamish the Harper performs "A Rose of Gold" to honor House Tyrell;[7] singers compete during the feast for a gilded lute with silver strings.[93] When Joffrey chokes to death, Tyrion is accused of murder.[7] The king's body is later dressed in gilded armor and placed on a bier.[105]

After escaping from the black cells with the aid of Jaime and Varys, Tyrion chokes Shae to death with the chain of linked golden hands and then kills his father, Lord Tywin, with a crossbow.[106]

A Feast for Crows

Tywin's body lays in state with his gilded armor and scabbard.[80] As Queen Regent, Cersei sits by the Iron Throne in a seat of gilded wood piled with crimson cushions.[92] She wears a new crown of pale spun gold set with sparkling emeralds.[107] Sweet Cersei is a new dromond with a gilded figurehead carved in the queen's likeness. Golden Rose is another of the new ships.[108] Qyburn, the new master of whisperers, wears white robes with whorls of gold.[109]

During the kingsmoot, Euron Greyjoy presents a dragonhorn bound with bands of red gold and dark steel.[110]

Because Jaime's sword hand has been cut off, an armorer designs for him a hand of wrought gold with inlaid nails of mother-of-pearl and calls him Goldenhand.[42]

A Dance with Dragons

Melisandre burns the Horn of Joramun, which is banded with old gold.[111] Selyse Florent has a crown of red gold with points in the shape of flames, like that of her husband Stannis.[112] Among the tribute collected from the free folk passing through the Wall are golden goblets and torques.[113] Tormund Giantsbane surrenders his old gold armbands.[114]

When Queen Daenerys weds Hizdahr zo Loraq, their wrists and ankles are ceremoniously bound together with chains of yellow gold.[54] After Daenerys disappears from Meereen, King Hizdahr wears a golden crown and has two thrones of gilded wood placed in the throne room of the Great Pyramid.[115]

Ser Robert Stone, the newest member of the Kingsguard, clasps his cloak with a pair of golden seven-pointed stars.[116]


If ever truly a man had armored himself in gold, it was Petyr Baelish, not Jaime Lannister. Jaime's famous armor was but gilded steel, but Littlefinger, ah ... Tyrion had learned a few things about sweet Petyr, to his growing disquiet.[117]
