Sansa II

Sansa has supper with Margaery and her grandmother, Lady Olenna, the Queen of Thorns.

Synopsis

Margaery Tyrell sends a personal invitation to Sansa inviting her to sup with the future queen and her grandmother, the Lady Olenna Tyrell. Sansa, though wary and wishing that Sandor was still with her, chooses to accept the invitation.

Sansa is escorted to the party by Margaery's brother, Ser Loras of the Kingsguard. They see two dozen men practicing in the yard, including Loras's elder brother, Ser Garlan Tyrell. Sansa mentions that Loras had given her a red rose during the Hand's tourney, but she realizes the Knight of Flowers does not remember her. Sansa unknowingly upsets Loras by talking about the death of Renly.

The party is held in the Maidenvault, where King Baelor the Blessed confined his sisters so they would not tempt him, as he had sworn a vow of celibacy. Sansa is introduced to all of Margaery's cousins and companions, but it is the Olenna, the Queen of Thorns, who takes the most interest in the girl.

Sansa praises Renly's gallantry, but Lady Olenna scoffs at his ambitions. She reveals that the Baratheons have Targaryen blood, and that the Tyrell claim to Highgarden has always been shaky since several other houses in the Reach can claim descent from Garth Greenhand as well, with the Florents being especially vocal. The old woman makes it known that her son, Lord Mace Tyrell, is an oaf for making this alliance with the Lannisters, and she wishes to learn from Sansa the truth of what Joffrey is.

Sansa is diplomatic about Joffrey at first, Olenna and Margaery urge her to reveal the truth about the king. Sansa is reluctant to do so, as telling the truth led to the execution of her honorable father, Lord Eddard Stark. Sansa fears that Varys is listening, but Olenna commands the fool Butterbumps to sing "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" at the top of his voice. Sansa eventually whispers that Joffrey is a monster and that she fears for Margaery.

Olenna assures Sansa that the wedding will still go on, as Mace is determined that his daughter wed the king. The Queen of Thorns offers Sansa a proposal to visit Highgarden after the wedding, and wishes Sansa to marry her crippled grandson Willas, heir to Highgarden.
