Davos II

Davos Seaworth, stranded in Blackwater Bay after the Battle of the Blackwater, is rescued by a passing ship.

Synopsis

Ser Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight, has washed up on the shore of a small island among the spears of the Merling King in Blackwater Bay. He came close to drinking seawater out of desperate thirst, but a squall a few days past luckily filled pools with fresh rainwater. He has been eating tiny crabs when he can find them, and a small cave provides minimal shelter.

Davos remembers swimming beneath the chain boom and wildfire during the Battle of the Blackwater, and then getting caught by the current and gulping seawater. But, somehow, he is alive, and believes the Seven still have some use for him. Despairing over the loss of four of his sons in the sea battle, he contemplates dying on the island, with this "Onion Rock" being his tombstone and legacy.

Having spotted a sail in the distance, Davos reaches for the pouch about his neck containing his finger bones, but they are gone. Davos prays to the Mother, first blaming Melisandre for the burning of the Seven from the sept at Dragonstone but then accepting responsibility for his inaction. Davos climbs his rock and calls out to the ship, weakly waving his arms.

Because the unknown galley has a striped hull, Davos believe it to be one of the Lysene ships from Salladhor Saan's fleet. They send a rowboat to Davos's rock and ask him which king he serves. When Davos says he serves King Stannis, a man in the boat says they do as well.
