Spiders are arachnids found throughout the known world.

Geography

In the Green Hell of Sothoryos, spotted spiders weave webs in great trees.[1]

Yeen is said to be haunted by ghouls and spiders,[2] and the Great Pyramid of Ghis is also said to be a haunt of bats and spiders.[3]

The arms of House Webber of Coldmoat depict a spotted spider on a silver web.[4] Lady Rohanne Webber wore a cloak of silvery silk which resembled a spider's web, and her banner bearer carried a staff crowned by an iron spider painted white and red.[4] Ser Lucas Inchfield, Rohanne's castellan, wore a helm decorated with an onyx spider.[4]

Webber, a sellsword of the Windblown, has spiders tattooed across his head, chest, and arms.[5]

Some free folk warriors decorate their shields with painted images of snakes and spiders.[6]

Acolytes of a spider goddess are said to have lived in the lost city of Lyber.[7]

Spiderwood is a settlement in the riverlands.[8]

History

During the Long Night, the Others are said to have hunted the last hero with packs of giant ice spiders.[9] In another telling, the Others rode the ice spiders as mounts.[10]

Spider silk was worn by the riders of the Kingdom of Sarnor.[7]

Tyanna of the Tower is said to have been a witch who spoke with rats and spiders.[11]

Lady Rohanne Webber gave Ser Duncan the Tall an ivory spider brooch with silver legs as a gift after he helped resolve her conflict with Ser Eustace Osgrey.[4]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Bran Stark recalls that the First Keep of Winterfell is now inhabited only by rats and spiders.[12] Old Nan tells him a tale of the Long Night, in which the Others hunted the last hero with packs of spiders big as hounds.[9] While riding in the wolfswood, Bran sees the silvery web of an empress spider.[13] Arya Stark recalls Old Nan telling her that spiders live in the crypt of Winterfell.[14]

A Storm of Swords

Bran finds cobwebs in the armory and the forge of the Nightfort.[15]

A Dance with Dragons

Bran sees spiderwebs in the cave of the three-eyed crow.[16]

Queen Selyse Florent has heard that the abandoned castles of the Night's Watch are full of rats and spiders, but Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, thinks that the cold has killed the spiders.[17] The rafters of the Shieldhall have become festooned with cobwebs.[18]
